Letter Grade Definitions
A: exceeds expectations
Satisfies several of the following
- writing component is complete and expressed clearly
- writing component conveys an understanding of the project
- includes additional (extra) analysis
- writing component calls attention to key concepts, interesting or
appropriate examples, or points out possible extensions or
generalizations
- shows creative and independent thought
B: meets expectations
Satisfies most or all of the following
- mathematics are almost entirely correct
- writing component is complete
- information is presented in appropriate formats (use tables,
pictures, ... as appropriate)
- shows effort and an interest in producing a quality report
May suffer from one or more of the following
- writing component suffers some clarity issues
- writing component indicates incomplete or incorrect understanding
- contains very few minor mathematical errors
- writing component calls attention to unimportant concepts,
unnecessary examples, or includes unrelated diversions
- writing component is somewhat disorganized
C: satisfactory - attempts to meet minimal requirements
Satisfies most or all of the following
- includes writing component explaining solution
- contains mathematical analysis of problem
- shows honest attempt to solve problem completely
Likely suffers from one or more of the following
- writing component is uninspiring
- writing component includes excessive detail (for example, paragraphs
explaining a computation when a formula would be sufficient)
- contains a serious mathematical error
- contains many minor mathematical errors
- shows minimal effort and no interest in producing a quality report
D: minimally acceptable
Satisfies the following
- contains enough material to show that some thought was given to project
Likely suffers from one or more of the following
- minimal or superficial mathematical analysis
- blind computation without understanding of purpose
- contains several serious mathematical errors
- missing components or requirements
- insufficient documentation showing what work was actually performed
(as an assignment, sufficient work must be shown to verify that
solutions were not made up)
F: unacceptable; plagiarized
Likely suffers from some of the following
- no mathematical analysis
- missing essential components
- fails to reference sources and cite those sources where appropriate
